Tips to Safeguard Your MemberCard Debit Card
1. Your MEMBER CARD Debit Card provides access to your account(s) and should always be kept in a safe place. Never lend to anyone, including friends and family.
2. Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN) – it is your electronic signature. Don’t disclose your PIN to anyone. Credit union, bank, merchant or law enforcement personnel should never ask for your PIN. Try to memorize it. If you feel you simply can’t memorize all the PINs you have, try imbedding them in a list, such as a telephone number list, that only you can decipher and don’t carry it in close proximity to the cards.
3. Avoid the obvious when selecting a PIN. Never use your name, street number, telephone number, date of birth, sequential numbers (e.g; 1234. 2468) etc. If you have several PINned cards, never assign the same PIN to all of them. If someone steals your wallet and discovers your PIN, they will test that PIN against all the cards in your wallet.
4. Never let your MEMBER CARD Debit Card out of your sight while conducting a transaction. Credit union, bank and merchant personnel should never request your assistance with authentication issues related to ATM or POS hardware or software problems.
5. Conduct transactions with your MEMBER CARD Debit Card only when and where you feel most secure. If you are uncomfortable, do not use your MEMBER CARD Debit Card. 6. Before using an ATM or point-of-sale (POS) terminal look for physical alterations on it. If it appears as though it may have been tampered with, do not use your MEMBER CARD Debit Card.
7. When completing a transaction, be aware of how close others are to you when entering your PIN. Always use your hand and/or body as a shield to prevent others from observing your PIN as you enter it.
8. Be wary of nearby strangers or “good Samaritans” that offer to “help” you if you are having difficulties with an ATM or Point of Sale transaction (e.g., suggesting re-entering your PIN when your card becomes jammed in the ATM of the Point of Sale transaction does not process). They may have rigged it to capture your card and are now trying to get you to reveal the PIN by watching you enter it.
9. After completing a transaction, remember to take your MEMBER CARD Debit Card and, if provided, the transaction record produced by the merchant or ATM. Check your account statements regularly to ensure that the transactions are yours.
10. If your MEMBER CARD Debit Card is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, or your PIN becomes known to others, immediately contact your branch to have the card cancelled.
11. If you are robbed, do not resist. Remember that your safety comes first. Any incident of theft should be reported to the police and your credit union as soon as possible.
