NLCU Introduces Cheque Imaging and E-statements!

Northern Light Credit Union is very excited to announce the new service we will be providing our members - cheque imaging and e-statements!

You will now be receiving imaged cheques instead of your original cheques each month.  You will be getting your statement by mail as usual but now your cheques will be clearly printed on 8½”x 11” paper for easy filing.  

Imaged cheques are legal documents and are acceptable as proof of payment by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and in courts of law.  If you need extra copies of your cheques, you will have the ability to access them through MemberDirect Internet Banking or have them printed out at the branch, usually the same day they are requested.  This is much faster service than we could provide when cheques were stored through past methods. Cheque Image 1

Northern Lights Credit Union is also giving you the option of choosing e-statements which is a digital copy of your statement accessible through MemberDirect instead of receiving a paper statement by mail.  This method is faster, more secure and you can save you statement issuance fee, if applicable, each month!

What is Cheque Imaging?
Cheque Imaging is a new technology with which we are able to scan the front and back of your original cheques into our computer system and permanently stores them, instead of capturing the image of your cheque on microfilm, as we used to do.

Will my monthly statement change?
Your monthly statement will not change, however, instead of receiving your original paper cheques each month, our system will gather all of your cheques for the month, digitize and organize them by cheque number, and neatly print them out on 81/2”X11” sheets of paper for easily filing.

Why are you going to this new system?
In order to provide you with the best possible service, we need to keep up with new technology. The Cheque Imaging System allows us to offer you better chequing service, which will improve many aspects of your account. You will find that we can service your needs faster and more efficiently.

Does this mean that I won’t get my cheques back?
You will not receive your original paper cheques back, what you will be receiving with your monthly statement is an exact imaged reproduction of the front and back of your original cheque, which is even better!

What if I need to prove I paid for something?
Imaged cheques are fully accepted as proof of payment by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (formerly Revenue Canada) and in a court of law. Plus, if you need an image of the front and back of a cheque, we can provide it almost instantly – just come in to any one of our eight branches or call us and we can print out the imaged cheque.

How long will the imaged cheques be kept?
We will keep a record of every cheque that is processed through our system for 7 years. We will have the ability to access these for you or you can access them on your own. 

What about security? Can computer hackers access images of my cheques?
Cheque images will be stored in the same absolute secure environment as all member account information.

Will members be allowed to access to their cheque images on their own and print them or download and save them? 

Yes!  You will have access to your cheques and statements through MemberDirect if you choose digital copies instead of receiving them in the mail.

I have the choice of an e-statement.  What is that?

An e-statement is a digital copy of your statement that you can access with MemberDirect Internet Banking.  It will look just like the statement you presently receive in the mail.  You can print it off yourself, save it on your computer or burn it to a disk much faster and more secure than the mailing method!
